There was once a merchant; he was so rich that he could pave the whole street, and most of a little alleyway too, with silver money. But he didn't do it; he knew of other ways to use his money. If he spent a shilling, he got back a daler. That's the sort of merchant he was--and then he died.

His friends no longer bothered about him now, as, indeed, they couldn't walk down the street together. But one of them, who was kind, sent him an old trunk and said, "Pack it (Pack up)!" Now, that was all very well, but he had nothing to pack, and so he seated himself in the trunk.

It was a funny trunk. As soon as you pressed the lock, the trunk could fly--and fly it did! Whoops! It flew up through the chimney with him, high above the clouds, farther and farther away. The bottom creaked, and he was afraid it would go to pieces, for then he would have made quite a big jolt! Heaven help us! And then he came to the land of the Turks. He hid the trunk in the woods under the dried leaves and then went into the town. He could do this easily, for among the Turks everyone, of course, walked around like he did, in a bathrobe and slippers. Then he met a nurse with a baby.

Plot summary

（１８３９年） 这是一个阿拉伯的故事，在《一千零一夜》中可以找到它的原形。但安徒生却作了不同的处理，把它和现实的人生与世态结合了起来：那个商人的儿子的钱花光了，“他的朋友们再也不愿意跟他来往了，因为他再也不能跟他们一道逛街。”但是当他快要成为驸马时，他买了些焰火和炮竹，以及种种可以想象得到的鞭炮，使所有的人享受一番欢乐。这时大家都称赞他说：“他的眼睛像一对发光的星星，他的胡须像起泡沫的水！”“他穿着一件火外套飞行”，“许多最美丽的天使藏在他的衣褶里向外窥望。”他成了土耳奇的神。但是乐极生悲，焰火的一颗星星落下来，点起一把火。箱子已经化成灰烬了。他再也飞不起来了，也没有办法到他的新娘那儿去。他和公主结婚的安排成了泡影。这个故事有许多东西值得人们深思。

这样，钱就很容易花光了；他的钱就真的这样花光了。最后他只剩下四个毫子，此外还有一双便鞋和一件旧睡衣。他的朋友们现在再也不愿意跟他来往了，因为他再也不能跟他们一道逛街。不过这些朋友中有一位心地很好的人，送给他一只箱子，说：“把你的东西收拾进去吧！”这意思是很好的，但是他并没有什么东西可以收拾进去，因此他就自己坐进箱子里去。

“那是国王的女儿居住的地方呀！”她说。“有人曾经作过预言，说她将要因为一个爱人而变得非常不幸，因此谁也不能去看她，除非国王和王后也在场。”

他飞走了，买了一件新的睡衣。于是他坐在树林里，想编出一个故事。这故事得在星期六编好，而这却不是一件容易的事儿啦。他总算把故事编好了，这已经是星期六。国王、王后和全体大臣们都到公主的地方来吃茶。他受到非常客气的招待。

“请您讲一个故事好吗？”王后说，“讲一个高深而富有教育意义的故事。”

“是的，讲一个使我们发笑的故事！”国王说。

“当然的，”他说。于是他就开始讲起故事来。现在请你好好地听吧：从前有一捆柴火，这些柴火对自己的高贵出身特别感到骄傲。它们的始祖，那就是说一株大枞树，原是树林里一株又大又老的树。这些柴火每一根就是它身上的一块碎片。这捆柴火现在躺在打火匣和老铁罐中间的一个架子上。它们谈起自己年轻时代的那些日子来。

“是的，”它们说，“当我们在绿枝上的时候，那才真算是在绿枝上啦！每天早上和晚间我们总有珍珠茶喝——这是露珠。太阳只要一出来，我们整天就有太阳光照着，所有的小鸟都来讲故事给我们听。我们可以看得很清楚，我们是非常富有的，因为一般的宽叶树只是在夏天才有衣服穿，而我们家里的人在冬天和夏天都有办法穿上绿衣服。不过，伐木人一来，就要发生一次大的变革：我们的家庭就要破裂。我们的家长成了一条漂亮的船上的主桅——这条船只要它愿意，可以走遍世界。别的枝子就到别的地方去了。而我们的工作却只是一些为平凡的人点火。因此我们这些出自名门的人就到厨房里来了。”

“我的命运可不同，”站在柴火旁边的老铁罐说。“我一出生到这世界上来，就受到了不少的摩擦和煎熬！我做的是一件实际工作——严格地讲，是这屋子里的第一件工作。我唯一的快乐是在饭后干干净净地，整整齐齐地，躺在架子上，同我的朋友们扯些有道理的闲天。除了那个水罐偶尔到院子里去一下以外，我们老是待在家里的。我们唯一的新闻贩子是那位到市场去买菜的篮子。他常常像煞有介事地报告一些关于政治和老百姓的消息。是的，前天有一个老罐子吓了一跳，跌下来打得粉碎。我可以告诉你，他可是一位喜欢乱讲话的人啦！”
